The impact of Artificial Intelligence on education

The now is transforming not only how students learn, but also how educators teach.

With the return to school and the boom in AI (Artificial Intelligence), we stop to think about what impact the topic has on education. Although it seems to be a new technology, AI is already well inserted in the Brazilian reality, since the country is the one that most uses Artificial Intelligence in Latin America. According to data from the 2022 study Advances in organizational culture based on data, analytics and AI (Avanços na cultura organizacional baseada em dados, analytics e IA) - in the Brazilian territory, 63% of companies use applications based on this technology. The report also shows that Brazil leads the way in the use of data, analytics and AI by 84% when it comes to the reliability and security of business activities.

Our conversation follows this provocation by Antonio Kozikoski, PhD, Master and Professor of Law at PUCPR (Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná): “It is up to institutions to guide teachers and students so that technology is an ally and not an enemy - and this does not apply only to Artificial Intelligence.” New tools can facilitate the production of copies and plagiarism without students making the intellectual effort to do so. On the other hand, these same platforms  collaborate positively for student life reviewing subjects, optimizing production processes, saving time on general chores. In relation to teachers, Artificial Intelligence does not seek to replace them, but to enhance their skills by helping their students’ individual performance and providing insights into more effective teaching strategies. Another front that this technology collaborates is in the accomplishment of administrative tasks, freeing up more time for teachers to focus on what is essential: teaching and relating to students.

Bill Gates, in an interview during the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego commented on the evolution of tools such as ChatGPT and their use for education. He said he believes that Artificial Intelligence can help in learning  reading and math by assisting rather than taking on the work of teachers.
Regarding distance learning, we understand that the use of the facility allows the creation of adaptive and customized teaching systems, providing a more personalized and engaging learning.

Unfortunately, most technologies for the application of artificial intelligence are still used only in the private sector. UNESCO's publication in the Education 2030 Project lists some challenges for AI in education: more comprehensive public policies, inclusion and equity. Considering this scenario, edtechs (startups in the educational field) have been growing: after all, the goal is to make the teaching-learning process more efficient and accessible. According to the 2022 Edtech Mapping (Mapeamento Edtech 2022), there are 813 active edtechs in Brazil and - compared to 2020 - this number grew 44%, evidencing the maturation of this sector and the recognition, by school managers, of the important role of technology in education.

Initiatives in the education sector are hampered by access to the Internet and 5G technology in the more than 8,510,000 km² of the Brazilian territory. The number of households with Internet access in Brazil has reached 80%, according to data from the ICT Households 2022 survey, conducted by the Núcleo de Informação e Coordenação do Ponto BR (Ponto BR Information and Coordination Center)(NIC.br). Connectivity is part of the routine of 81% of Brazilians representing 149 million persons. Of this total, 62% of users use the Internet only on the cell phone. And it is here that the 5G technology comes to impact the improvement of connectivity. According to Anatel (Brazilian Telecommunications Authority), access to 5G should reach all cities in the country by 2029. We continue to walk and evolve and there is still much to discuss and learn about technology in education, but we have two certainties: that education is the greatest accelerator of people, companies and nations; and that digital culture is an one-way road.
